Conscious Sedation

Afraid of the dentist or have a strong gag reflex? Conscious sedation is the ideal solution for experiencing every treatment in a calm and relaxed way, especially for anxious patients, children or adults with dental phobia.

It is a simple, safe and non-invasive technique that involves inhaling a mixture of oxygen and nitrous oxide through a nasal mask. The patient quickly enters a state of deep relaxation but stays fully conscious and cooperative throughout the session. There is no fear, tension or pain: time seems to pass more quickly and the treatment is often experienced as a pleasant, stress-free moment.

It is a particularly useful technique for children, patients with generalised anxiety, those with a very active gag reflex or who find it hard to tolerate lengthy procedures. The effect wears off within a few minutes, allowing an immediate recovery after the session, with no need for assistance or prolonged rest.

How does the treatment work?

01

Initial assessment and medical history

We make sure there are no contraindications to the use of nitrous oxide.

02

Fitting the nasal mask

The patient breathes in the mixture of oxygen and nitrous oxide, beginning to relax within a few minutes.

03

Calm, anxiety-free dental treatment

The patient stays awake, relaxed and cooperative throughout the session.

04

End of the session and return to normal

The effect of the gas fades quickly and the patient can leave the practice completely independently.

Frequently asked questions

What is nitrous oxide?

It is a sedative and analgesic gas, commonly known as “laughing gas”, that brings about relaxation and well-being. It has been used widely and safely in dentistry for decades.

Is it dangerous?

Absolutely not. It is a safe, well-tolerated technique with no serious side effects. The patient is monitored at all times and the effect wears off a few minutes after the inhalation ends.

Can I drive after sedation with gas?

Yes. Unlike intravenous sedation, nitrous oxide has a very short-lasting effect. A few minutes after the treatment ends, you can resume your normal daily activities, including driving.

Is it suitable for children too?

Yes, it is one of the most widely used techniques in paediatric dentistry. It helps children experience their dental visit with greater ease, reducing anxiety and fear.

Does the treatment make you “fall asleep”?

No, you do not lose consciousness. You stay awake, able to talk and respond, but in a state of deep relaxation, as if you were in a “protected bubble”.

What does it feel like?

Many patients describe a feeling of lightness, warmth or euphoria. The perception of pain and time is reduced, making the procedure far more tolerable.

How long does the effect of the gas last?

The effect begins within a few minutes and ends almost immediately after you stop breathing in the gas. There are no residues or lasting effects.
